Sometimes the last known moment is the part that makes the whole case harder to understand.
Some disappearances are haunting because there is no clear starting point. Others are worse because there is.
A crashed car. A beach walk. A man sprinting out of an airport. A final radio call. A child seen walking beside a highway before sunrise.
Each detail sounds like it should lead somewhere. Instead, it just makes the case harder to shake.
Here are five disappearances where the last known detail feels wrong.
#5 Maura Murray’s Locked Car
On February 9, 2004, 21-year-old Maura Murray crashed her black Saturn on Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire.
That part is known. It is what happened next that makes the case so hard to sit with.
A nearby school bus driver stopped and spoke with her. Maura reportedly told him she had already called AAA, even though cell service in the area was poor. The driver went home and called police. By the time officers arrived, Maura was gone.
Her car was still there. The doors were locked. Some of her belongings were inside. There was damage to the front of the vehicle. There were no clear signs of where she went.
That tiny window between the crash and the police arriving is the part that keeps pulling people back in. She was seen. Help was close. Then she was simply not there anymore.
More than 20 years later, Maura Murray’s disappearance remains unsolved, and that locked car still feels less like an answer than the start of the real mystery.
#4 Harold Holt Walking Into the Surf
On December 17, 1967, Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt went to Cheviot Beach in Victoria with a small group of companions.
He was not just some random swimmer having a bad day. Holt was the sitting prime minister of Australia, a powerful political figure, and an experienced swimmer who knew the area. That is part of what makes the last known detail feel so strange.
The surf was rough that day. Witnesses later said Holt entered the water anyway. Then he disappeared.
That is almost the whole scene. A prime minister walks into the ocean in front of other people, and within moments, he is gone.
A massive search followed, involving police, the navy, divers, helicopters, and volunteers. Nothing turned up. No body. No clear final answer. Just the beach, the waves, and a disappearance too public to feel real.
Holt was eventually presumed dead, and the official explanation is that he drowned. That is probably the simplest answer.
But simple does not always mean satisfying.
More than half a century later, the last image is still hard to shake: Australia’s prime minister walking into the surf and never coming back.
#3 Lars Mittank Running Out of the Airport
Lars Mittank was a 28-year-old German man on vacation in Bulgaria in 2014.
At first, the story sounds like a rough trip that got worse. He got into a fight, injured his ear, and was reportedly told not to fly until a doctor cleared him. His friends went home without him, while Lars stayed behind near Varna Airport.
Then the last known detail happens.
On July 8, 2014, Lars went to the airport to see if he could fly. During a medical check, something seemed to change. He left his luggage behind, ran out of the airport, crossed the parking area, climbed a fence, and disappeared into the area beyond it.
The CCTV footage is what makes this case feel so unsettling. He does not stroll away. He runs. Not like someone calmly changing plans. Like someone suddenly believes leaving immediately matters more than everything else.
His wallet, phone, and passport were reportedly left behind. That makes the airport footage harder to explain, not easier.
There are theories, of course. Panic. Injury. Fear. A bad reaction to medication. Something else entirely. But none of them have closed the case.
Lars Mittank is still missing, and that final image of him sprinting out of the airport remains one of the strangest last known moments in any modern disappearance case.
#2 Frederick Valentich’s Final Radio Call
On October 21, 1978, 20-year-old Australian pilot Frederick Valentich took off in a small Cessna 182 for a flight over Bass Strait.
He never arrived.
What makes the case famous is not just that his plane vanished. It is what he reportedly said before it did.
During the flight, Valentich contacted air traffic control and described an aircraft near him. He said it was moving strangely. He described lights. He said it seemed to be orbiting above him.
The controller told him there was no known traffic in the area.
Then came the line that stayed with the case: Valentich said the object was “not an aircraft.”
Soon after, the transmission ended with a strange metallic sound. No confirmed wreckage was found. No body was recovered. The plane was gone.
There are grounded explanations. He may have become disoriented. He may have seen another aircraft, a planet, or lights reflecting in a way that confused him. Some have suggested pilot error. Others went straight to UFO theories, because apparently a missing plane over dark water was not unsettling enough by itself.
But the final radio call is what keeps this case alive.
Frederick Valentich disappeared with his plane, and his last recorded words still make the whole thing feel like it ended in the middle of a sentence.
#1 Asha Degree Walking Down Highway 18
On February 14, 2000, 9-year-old Asha Degree left her family’s home in Shelby, North Carolina, sometime before dawn.
That detail alone is difficult to understand.
It was cold. It was raining. Most children would have been asleep. Instead, Asha was reportedly seen walking along Highway 18 in the dark, carrying a backpack.
Two separate drivers later said they saw a young girl walking near the road. One turned around to check on her. According to reports, Asha moved away from the road and into the woods.
After that, she was gone.
Her case has never stopped haunting people because the last known detail feels so impossible. A child leaves home before sunrise, in bad weather, on a rural highway, with no clear reason anyone has been able to prove.
Investigators later found some of her belongings, and more than a year later, her backpack was discovered buried and wrapped in plastic miles away. That discovery gave the case another chilling detail, but not an answer.
Asha Degree’s disappearance remains unsolved.
And of all the cases on this list, hers sits at number one because the final known image is almost too hard to process: a 9-year-old girl walking into the dark while everyone who loved her thought she was safe at home.
